Fertlity Preservation

Fertility Preservation

Fertility Preservation is any type of procedure that involves the process of saving or protecting eggs, sperm, or reproductive tissue so that a person can use them to have biological children in the future. It is done before any medical treatment or condition that may compromise one’s fertility, for example, cancer treatment such as radiation therapy or chemotherapy.

Cancer Patients/ Oncofertility

Cancer diagnosis can be emotionally overwhelming and may be the hardest thing you have ever faced. It is difficult to go through multiple treatment options. However, it is important to keep two things in mind- there is possibility of full recovery as overall cancer recovery and survival rates are higher than before, and cancer treatment can cause infertility both in men and women.

At PHS Fertility IVF & Womencare, we can help you preserve your fertility before you start your treatment and so give you a chance of having a family later on.

Elective Fertility Preservation

Besides cancer, patients with certain diseases, disorders, and life events that affect fertility may benefit from fertility preservation
Cryopreservation procedure allows freezing of the eggs, sperms, or embryos for future use.

What are the most common fertility preservation measures?

Sperm Cryopreservation

Sperm cryopreservation or sperm freezing is highly effective and simple fertility preservation option in males diagnosed with cancer or before any medical condition or surgery that may compromise future fertility. Options are:

Egg Freezing/ Oocyte Cryopreservation:

Oocyte cryopreservation or egg freezing, involves retrieving 10-12 healthy eggs and storing them in liquid nitrogen. Later, when your body is ready, the eggs are fertilized and implanted in your uterus. Many women who have been diagnosed with cancer, especially those 37 years old or younger, are good candidates for oocyte cryopreservation. Women can preserve their fertility by retrieving eggs when fertility potential is higher and freezing them to be used later, when they are ready for motherhood.

Embryo Cryopreservation

Embryo cryopreservation or embryo freezing, is fertility preservation technique of choice in married women (or in those with a stable partner) wanting to preserve fertility. The procedure involves extracting eggs from the ovaries, which are then fertilized with sperm through in vitro fertilization, the embryo is cultured in incubator for 3-5 days and then frozen for future use.

Ovarian Transposition

Ovarian transposition is a surgical procedure in which the ovaries are moved or repositioned to a different location within the pelvis or abdomen.

Gonadal Shielding

Prior to radiotherapy in cancer the radiation exposure to the reproductive organs, specifically the testes in males and the ovaries in females, is minimised using protective barriers or shields known as Gonadal Shielding.
